Archival Disc : Next Generation Optical Disc Coming With 300GB Memory Space

When the first compact disc or CD came in market people were amazed by its memory size. At that time it was more used for CD player for music or video purpose. Around 700MB memory size was enough for people. It was compact, thin and light weight not like the heavy VHS. That’s why CD or compact disc become very popular. CD usage optical LASER light to read and write that’s why its called optical disc. Then technology developed and give us DVD which was 6 times more memory capacity than a CD.

Day by day our technology evolves. We become HD. 720p was not enough for us. We got 1080p. So our movie size becomes larger. So need a disc with more memory space than a DVD. And the revelation came when Blu Ray disc came on the market with more Memory capacity than DVD. A Blu Ray discs can contain up to 128GB.

After HD we got UltraHD or 4K tv. So again our video size is more more larger. So we again need better than a Blu Ray disc. Standing todays technology gives us another disc which has more capacity than Blu ray disc. And this wonderful gift is Archival disc with memory capacity 300GB. Two times than Blu ray disc.

Today Sony and Panasonic announced this next generation disc Archival Disc with 300GB memory capacity for long term storage. Which will be available in the market at the beginning of 2015. On future Archival Disc will be available in 500GB and 1TB memory space.

Can you imagine A disc having a memory space 1TB or 500GB. Normally our external or internal hard drive has this kind of memory capacity.

Archival Disc Roadmap

In July 29, 2013 both Sony And Panasonic signed a joint venture to develop a next-generation standard for professional-use high volume optical discs having memory capacity than Blu Ray for long-term digital data storage. Since then they have tried to develop this Archival Disc. Todays Archival Disc is the result of success.

But you have to wait more to see this Archival disc in the market. It will give a new way to data storage technology.
