NOTE: Before doing this make a backup of your device and keep the backup on your PC.

1. Go to http://en.miui.com/unlock/
2. Click on Unlock and login with your MI account, if you don’t have then make one first
3. Now fill up this form, make sure be honest as why you want to unlock bootloader and make it lengthy not very short.
4. Now tick the checkbox and hit Apply now
5. You will receive an OTP on your mobile, just enter it and proceed
6. Now you need to wait till you get confirmation via SMS
7. Once you get it confirmation, download this tool MiFlashUnlock_1.1.0315.1_en.zip and unzip it
8. You will a file MiFlashUnlock.exe, just run it
9. Now login with your Mi account, it will check the account has permission to unlock ( Don’t close this tool)
10. Switch off your phone then press and hold both Vol Down and Power button to go fastboot mode
11. If  it’s in fastboot mode connect your Phone to PC via USB cable
12. Wait 10-15 seconds, you will get like this
13. Hit on Unlock, it will take some time to unlock. Once done it will show like this
14. Now your device is unlocked

How to check if Bootloader is unlocked or not?

1. Switch off your device
2. Press and hold Vol Down and Power button to go Fastboot mode
3. Now open command prompt and type this command

    fastboot devices

4. It will show your device if driver properly installed, now again enter this command

    fastboot oem device-info

5. It will return device unlocked: true mean its bootloader unlocked

So go and unlock your Mi 5 or Redmi Note 3. Just keep it mind that unlocking bootloader may void your warranty so read the term and condition before doing this.
